Why lettuce is the best first hydroponic crop
Lettuce has a short cycle, modest nutrient demand, and clear visual feedback when something is wrong (tip burn, stretch, bitterness). In controlled environments it routinely finishes in about 28–45 days from seed depending on type, light, and temperature.
Butterhead, oakleaf, and loose-leaf types are more forgiving indoors than dense crisphead iceberg types, which need tighter climate and timing. Romaine works well but can tip-burn under high PPFD and high EC.
Germination and transplant
Sow into rinsed rockwool cubes, rapid rooters, or similar inert plugs. Soak plugs to about pH 5.5–6.0. Keep evenly moist at ~65–72°F until sprouts appear (often 2–4 days).
Transplant to net pots when roots emerge from the plug. In DWC, position so the plug bottom contacts or sits just above solution with roots reaching water. In NFT, ensure the film wets the root zone without drowning the crown.
Avoid burying the crown — lettuce crowns that stay wet and dark rot easily.
pH, EC, and nutrient practice
Target pH 5.8–6.2 inside a broader 5.5–6.5 band. Drift above ~6.5 risks micronutrient lockout; chronic lows stress roots.
EC commonly sits around 0.8–1.2 mS/cm for many butterheads and leaf types (about 400–600 PPM on a 500 scale). Seedlings prefer the low end. Aggressive light and airflow can support the upper end; weak light plus high EC causes tip burn and bitter flavor.
Use a complete hydroponic leafy formula. Mix A then B into water, measure EC, then set pH. Change reservoirs about every 7–14 days; top off with plain pH-adjusted water between changes.
Light, temperature, and airflow
PPFD about 200–400 µmol/m²/s for 12–16 hours covers most indoor lettuce. Higher intensity without matching climate control raises tip-burn risk. Daily light integral for leafy greens often lands near ~12–17 mol/m²/day.
Air temperature 60–70°F (16–21°C) keeps plants compact and mild. Solution ideally near 65–68°F; warmer water holds less oxygen and favors pathogens.
Gentle canopy airflow reduces tip burn by aiding calcium transport through transpiration. Stagnant humid air is a common indoor failure mode.
Tip burn, bitterness, and bolting
Tip burn: necrotic leaf edges on new growth. Causes include high growth rate under high light, high EC, low airflow, uneven VPD, or calcium delivery issues — not always “zero calcium in the tank.” Ease EC, improve air movement, cool the root zone, and avoid overdriving LEDs.
Bitterness: stress chemistry. Warm reservoirs, late harvest after elongation, and high EC are frequent triggers. Harvest earlier and keep roots cool.
Bolting: flowering stem under heat or long stressful days. Keep temperatures in the leafy band and choose heat-tolerant cultivars for warmer rooms.
Harvest and succession
Cut-and-come-again: harvest outer leaves and let the center continue. Whole-head: cut at the base when heads fill out but before they stretch.
Stagger sowings every 7–10 days for continuous salad. Clean net pots between cycles to limit biofilm carryover.
