Daily Light Integral (DLI) Calculator

Calculate Daily Light Integral from PPFD and your light schedule to optimise photosynthesis.

DLI

DLI ≈ PPFD × hours × 0.0036 (mol/m²/day).

Crop comparison

Result

17.3 mol/m²/day

Leafy greens ~12–17 mol/m²/day. Above typical band — watch for stress.

How to use this DLI Calculator tool

Set your options in the calculator above, read the result, then verify with a calibrated meter when the decision matters. Bookmark this page for reservoir day — consistent units beat copying numbers from charts that never name their scale or bottle rate.

Formula reference

DLI (mol/m²/day) = PPFD (µmol/m²/s) × light hours × 3600 ÷ 1,000,000

What DLI tells you that PPFD alone does not

PPFD is an instantaneous rate — micromoles of photons hitting a square metre each second. DLI totals those photons over a full day, expressed as mol/m²/day. A dim light run for 18 hours can deliver a similar DLI to a brighter light run for 12 hours, with different heat and electricity trade-offs.

Plants respond to the daily integral as much as to peak intensity. Seedlings need lower DLI to avoid stretch stress from excess light; mature fruiting canopies need higher DLI to support flowers and fruit. Tracking DLI lets you tune schedule and intensity as a pair.

Typical DLI ranges for common hydroponic crops

Many lettuce and leafy green crops perform well around 12–17 mol/m²/day indoors, depending on cultivar and CO₂. Herbs often sit in a similar band. Fruiting crops such as tomatoes and peppers are commonly pushed toward 20–30+ mol/m²/day when environment and nutrition can support it.

These ranges assume the rest of the system is healthy — correct EC, pH, root-zone temperature, and humidity. Raising DLI without enough CO₂, nutrients, or cooling simply increases photoinhibition and tip burn risk, especially on sensitive lettuce under LEDs.

Measuring PPFD for a trustworthy DLI

Measure PPFD at canopy height with a quantum sensor, not a phone camera app if you need accuracy. Take several points across the tray and average them, or calculate DLI for the weakest edge if uniformity matters for even growth.

If your driver is dimmable, log the PPFD at the dimmer setting you actually run. Manufacturer charts at 100% power overstate DLI when you hang high or dim for seedlings. Recheck after raising or lowering the fixture.

Using photoperiod strategically

Longer lights-on hours increase DLI linearly for the same PPFD. Leafy greens often run 16–18 hours; some fruiting crops use 12 hours to manage stretch and energy costs while relying on higher intensity. Continuous 24-hour light can work for certain greens but may stress other species.

When DLI is low, you can raise intensity, lengthen the photoperiod, or both. When DLI is high and leaves bleach, dim first or raise the fixture before cutting hours too aggressively — plants still need a dark period suited to the crop for respiration and hormone balance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I estimate PPFD without a meter?

Manufacturer PPFD maps at a stated height are a starting point. A dedicated quantum meter is far more reliable for DLI decisions than smartphone approximations.

Does sunlight in a greenhouse count the same way?

Yes — DLI includes all photosynthetically active photons. Greenhouse growers often sum sunlight DLI with supplemental lighting to hit seasonal targets.

Why are my plants light-stressed at a “normal” DLI?

Hot leaf temperatures, low humidity, high EC, or uneven hot spots can cause stress even when average DLI looks fine. Check canopy temperature and PPFD uniformity together.
