Buy order beats shopping cart panic
The fastest way to waste money in hydroponics is buying a huge light and no meters. Chemistry blindness kills more first grows than insufficient PPFD.
Recommended buy order: (1) pH meter + buffers + storage solution, (2) EC/TDS meter, (3) air pump + stone for DWC, (4) reservoir + net pots + inert media, (5) complete hydro nutrients, (6) then lighting upgrades.
Meters first
A calibratable pH pen and a reliable EC meter turn every guide on this site into an actionable SOP. Without them you are guessing availability and strength.
See our pH meter and EC meter reviews for the models and care habits we recommend for home labs.
Oxygen and hygiene basics
In DWC, continuous aeration is not optional in warm rooms. Size the air pump to the vessel, keep lids opaque, and scrub biofilm at reservoir changes.
Net pots and clay pebbles are reusable if cleaned between cycles. Cloudy green water means light is leaking into the solution — fix that before buying algaecides.
Keep it simple
You do not need a full controller stack to succeed. Measure pH and EC, keep roots cool and oxygenated, and change reservoirs on a schedule.
Add automation only after those habits are automatic.
