Fragaria × ananassa
How to grow strawberries hydroponically
Compact and highly marketable. Vertical towers and NFT channels keep fruit clean and easy to harvest.

Best systems
Variety matters more than gadgets
June-bearing strawberries focus fruit in a short window. Day-neutral types fruit more continuously under suitable daylength and temperature — usually better for indoor hydroponic goals.
Start from certified disease-free plugs or runners when possible. Weak nursery stock wastes months of climate control.
Systems and media
Vertical towers, gutter/NFT styles, and drip into coco or coarse media are common. Keep crowns dry and fruit hanging free of constant moisture to limit Botrytis.
Avoid drowning crowns in DWC-style submersion. Strawberries want oxygenated root zones with intermittent or film wetting, not soggy crowns.
Climate and nutrition
pH often targeted ~5.5–6.2. EC commonly ~1.0–1.8 mS/cm depending on stage and cultivar. Excess salts quickly show as leaf margin burn on sensitive plants.
Temperatures ~60–75°F suit many indoor programs. Very high heat reduces fruit quality. PPFD roughly 250–450 µmol/m²/s with 12–16 hour photoperiods is a working band for many home setups.
Manage humidity to limit mold while allowing enough transpiration for calcium movement into fruit.
Pollination, runners, and harvest
Indoor flowers need help: soft brush, electric toothbrush vibration, or fans. Incomplete pollination yields misshapen berries.
Remove excess runners if you want fruit instead of vegetative sprawl. Harvest fully colored fruit; strawberries do not improve much after picking compared with some climacteric fruits.
Quick lab tips
• Choose day-neutral cultivars for more continuous indoor production.
• Hand-pollinate or use airflow/brush indoors for better fruit set.
• Keep fruit off wet media to reduce mold.
Frequently asked questions
What pH for hydroponic strawberries?
Often about 5.5–6.2. Stay consistent and watch new growth for iron chlorosis if pH rises.
Do indoor strawberries need pollination?
Yes. Without bees, hand-pollinate or provide mechanical flower movement for full berries.
Why are my berries molding?
High humidity, poor airflow, and fruit contacting wet surfaces. Increase air exchange and keep fruit dry.
