Humidity alone is not the whole story

Relative humidity describes how saturated the air is at the current temperature, but plants care about the vapour pressure deficit (VPD) between leaf and air. The same 60% RH is a very different environment at 20°C leaf temperature than at 28°C.

VPD drives transpiration, which pulls water and nutrients through the plant. Too low and plants transpire sluggishly, staying wet and inviting mould. Too high and they drink aggressively, which can cause tip burn in hydroponic lettuce when EC is also elevated.

Stage-based humidity targets

Clones and seedlings often prefer higher humidity and lower VPD so thin cuticles do not desiccate. Vegetative plants usually run a moderate VPD that encourages steady uptake. Late fruiting sometimes uses a slightly higher VPD to reduce botrytis risk on dense flowers or fruit clusters.

Charts differ by crop, but many indoor growers keep early veg roughly in a 0.8–1.1 kPa band and push toward 1.2–1.5 kPa later if the species tolerates it. Always temper chart values with how your cultivar actually looks — soft, humid-loving greens dislike aggressive drying.

Why leaf temperature beats air temperature for VPD

Leaves under LEDs are often cooler than the surrounding air; under HPS they may run warmer. VPD calculated from air temperature alone can mis-rank stress. An infrared thermometer aimed at the upper canopy gives a better leaf input for humidity recommendations.

If leaf temperature drops far below air temperature, true VPD shrinks and the room can feel “fine” on a thermo-hygrometer while plants are barely transpiring. Measure both sensors at canopy height, not on the floor next to a humidifier.

Controlling humidity in small hydro tents

Humidifiers raise RH for seedlings; dehumidifiers and stronger exhaust lower RH in late flower or during lights-off spikes. Reservoir surface area and DWC buckets also add moisture — lids and less aggressive air bubbling reduce unintended humidification.

Frequently asked questions

What VPD should I use for butterhead lettuce?

Many indoor lettuce growers stay near roughly 0.8–1.2 kPa depending on temperature. Watch for tip burn if VPD and EC are both high under strong LEDs.

Why is humidity high at night in my tent?

Transpiration and reservoir evaporation continue while exhaust may be weaker and air cooler, raising RH. Run a dehumidifier or staged exhaust on a lights-off schedule if mould is a risk.

Do I need leaf temperature if I only have air temp?

Air temp is better than nothing, but leaf temp improves accuracy. If you assume leaf equals air under LEDs, you may slightly overestimate VPD.
