Coverage is intensity distributed over area

A grow light’s marketed coverage area assumes a target intensity for a crop class — often modest for seedlings and higher for fruiting plants. Spreading the same fixture over too many square feet starves the canopy edges while the centre may still look bright to the eye.

Wattage is a useful planning proxy but not a perfect PPFD map. Two 100 W LEDs can have different optics, diode efficiency, and spread. Use manufacturer PPFD charts when available, and treat watt-per-area calculators as a first layout pass before you hang and meter the canopy.

How hanging height changes the footprint

Raising a light widens the illuminated footprint and lowers intensity at the canopy. Lowering it shrinks coverage and raises PPFD under the centre, which can bleach sensitive lettuce if you push too close. Uniformity usually improves with a slight overlap between multiple fixtures rather than one light stretched thin.

Follow the vendor’s minimum hanging height to avoid hot spots. After major height changes, recheck leaf temperature and plant posture — tacoing leaves and bleached tops signal excess intensity even when the wattage seemed “right” on paper.

Matching light to hydroponic crop goals

Leafy greens and herbs often thrive at moderate PPFD with long photoperiods, prioritising even coverage over brute force. Fruiting crops need higher intensity and tighter uniformity across flowering sites. Plan coverage for the mature canopy diameter, not the seedling tray size.

Reflective walls, tent material, and bare floors all change how much light is recycled onto the edges. Dark rooms waste edge photons; a reflective enclosure can make a modest fixture perform like a slightly larger coverage map without raising wattage.

Efficiency: usable photons versus wall draw

Coverage efficiency asks whether your watts are landing on plant leaves or lighting empty floor. If the recommended footprint is smaller than your tray, add fixtures or shrink the planted area. If the footprint is larger than the crop, raise the light slightly or dim it to save power and reduce heat load.

Heat from inefficient drivers still affects reservoir temperature in small tents. Right-sizing coverage reduces both electricity waste and the environmental swings that stress hydroponic roots. Pair coverage planning with a DLI target so photoperiod and intensity work together.

Frequently asked questions

Is manufacturer “coverage area” trustworthy?

Treat it as the area where intensity stays above their stated minimum, often for veg. Check whether the number is for seedlings, veg, or flower, and verify with a PPFD meter if you can.

Do I calculate using draw watts or diode watts?

Use actual wall-draw watts for power and heat planning. Marketing “equivalent watts” from old HID comparisons are not reliable for LED coverage estimates.

Should lights cover the whole tent or only the tray?

Prioritise the planted canopy. Lighting empty corners wastes energy unless you need aisle visibility. Overlap fixtures on the crop, not on unused floor.
