Ideal reservoir temperatures for most crops

For many hydroponic leafy greens and herbs, nutrient solution between about 18°C and 22°C (64–72°F) balances root metabolism with dissolved oxygen. Slightly warmer can still work with strong aeration; cooler water holds more oxygen but can slow growth if it drops too far.

Fruiting crops sometimes tolerate the warmer end of that band, but chronically hot reservoirs invite Pythium and other root pathogens. Measure the water itself, not only room air — LED drivers, pumps, and sunlight on a dark tote can heat solution well above ambient.

Why hot water starves roots of oxygen

Dissolved oxygen falls as temperature rises. Roots need O₂ for nutrient uptake; in warm, stagnant solution they suffocate even if EC and pH look perfect. Symptoms include browning root tips, slimy smell, wilting under bright light, and sudden plant collapse in DWC buckets.

Air stones, properly sized air pumps, and falling-water returns help, but they cannot fully offset a reservoir sitting at 28°C+. Cooling the solution is often more effective than adding ever-larger air pumps that also dump heat into the water.

Practical ways to cool or warm a reservoir

To cool: raise lights slightly, improve tent exhaust, insulate the reservoir from floor heat, use a light-coloured or reflective tote, place the tank outside the warm canopy zone, or add an aquarium chiller for larger systems. Frozen bottles are a short-term stopgap — avoid uncontrolled dilution as ice melts in bags that can leak.

To warm a cold garage system: use an aquarium heater rated for the volume, keep it circulating, and shield cords from nutrient splash. Cold water below ~15°C can stall nutrient uptake and slow growth even when oxygen levels are high.

Monitoring habits that prevent surprises

Check water temperature at lights-on and late in the photoperiod when heat load peaks. Log readings next to EC and pH; a rising temp trend often explains a mysterious root issue better than chasing a new nutrient brand.

In DWC, each bucket can differ from the shared reservoir. Measure at the root zone when possible. Keep lids opaque — light in the water grows algae that compete for oxygen and clog pumps, compounding temperature stress.

Frequently asked questions

Is 25°C too warm for lettuce in DWC?

It is on the warm side. Many growers see rising root-disease risk above the low twenties Celsius. Increase aeration and cool the reservoir if leaves wilt or roots brown.

Do chillers use a lot of electricity?

Small chillers add load, but preventing crop loss often outweighs the cost in warm climates. Insulating the reservoir and reducing ambient heat can let you run a smaller chiller or none at all.

Should I match water temp to air temp?

Not exactly. Air can run warmer than the root zone. Aim for stable, crop-appropriate water temperature even if daytime air is higher, provided leaf VPD stays in range.
